World T20: Sri Lanka edge Super Over win

The closest game of the tournament so far ended with Sri Lanka beating New Zealand as a result of conceding fewer runs off their Super Over when the scores finished level in Pallekelle.

Batting first, Sri Lanka made 13 runs off the extra over bowled by Tim Southee, including three runs from wides. In response, New Zealand managed only eight runs after Martin Guptill was brilliantly caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan on the long-off boundary from the penultimate ball, which looked like it would carry for six.

It was a fitting climax for Dilshan, whose 76 off 53 balls, had brought Sri Lanka to within sight of victory. But, just as New Zealand's batsmen had earlier, Sri Lanka lost momentum in their innings. Dilshan fell in the 19th over and it was left to Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne to score eight from the last over.

Thirimanne scooped the penultimate ball for four over short fine leg, leaving one run to be scored off the final ball. After a wild swipe from Thirimanne, the ball trickled out to cover off the inside edge where James Franklin took aim at the bowler's end.

Franklin's throw missed the stumps and New Zealand's captain Ross Taylor who had gained ground to reach the stumps failed to gather the ball cleanly. Somehow a bail came off before Thirimanne made his ground with a despairing dive. Taylor was ready to concede defeat, believing he had knocked the ball off with his hand, but umpire Simon Taufel's call for a TV replay gave the wicket to New Zealand setting up the dramatic finale.
