A lone first-half goal from Lucas Paqueta helps Brazil beat Peru 1-0 in the Copa America semi-final on Monday. The host nation will be seeking their 10th title in the South American championship at the Maracana Stadium and could play against Argentina or Colombia in the decider next Saturday.

Brazil made sure they were on top of their game in the first half, but it took them 35 minutes to break the deadlock. A side-footed volley from Paqueta after nice work by Neymar was enough to set the deal for Brazil.

Neymar, on the bumpy field of the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, tricked defender Alexander Callens on the left edge of the box and assisted Paqueta, who pushed the ball to the back of the net.

Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese - who was one of the best in the match despite his team's elimination - was seen making two difficult saves from short range in the 18th minute. He saved one by Neymar and the other by Richarlison, which would have allowed Brazil to cruise into victory sooner.

As for the second half, it was very different, with Gianluca Lapadula forcing goalkeeper Ederson to make a key save in the 49th minute in a crossed shot. The hosts still had opportunities but continued to waste counter-attacks.

Two years ago the Selecao won the title without injured Neymar in a 3-1 win against Peru. Next Saturday's final - which will see no fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic - could prove to be more challenging.
