Warne, Taylor urge to lift ban from playing T20 cricket in Melbourne parks

Spin legend Shane Warne led a chorus this morning after the Boroondara Council clamped down on the Twenty20 format in more than 40 parks, ovals and cricket grounds.

Cricketers have been banned from playing Twenty20 so as to minimise the risk of injury and property damage.

Boroondara Council says the new rules - which apply even to some league cricket clubs - arose from a risk review of its sports grounds.
 
"Well that seems a bit silly. It's disappointing that the council have banned (it). Hopefully they reassess and get it back on and they are allowed out there," Warne said.

He said the new formula gave people of all ages a chance to get off the couch and be more active.

"(Children) are distracted by so many things these days, whether it's internet or games and all those sorts of things, you need to find a balance between both," The Herald Sun quoted him, as saying.

"Cricket's a great thing for children to be involved in. It's a team game and you need to understand and appreciate other people's success," Warne said.

Former Aussie skipper Mark Taylor also urged a rethink, and said: "I think it's a shame. I think kids love Twenty20 cricket. If they love it that much you have got to give them the chance to play it. It's a shame that's happened."

It is believed a car window shattered by a soaring ball prompted the ban.
