After badminton ace Saina Nehwal expressed her disappointment over being allegedly snubbed for the Padma Bhushan awards this year, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said that he wanted everyone to play for the nation as per their merits."Want everyone to play for the nation as per their merits. My ministry will give them all the support to make them play well," said Sonowal. Echoing similar sentiments, former sports minister MS Gill said that anyone who gives an application cannot be conferred the prestigious award."Anyone who gives an application should not be given the Padma award, if the nation thinks you are good, award will be given," he added. Nehwal had earlier expressed her disappointment over the Sports Ministry recommending wrestler Sushil Kumar for the award over her. The Olympic bronze medallist added that she would have felt proud had the government conferred the award to both Sushil Kumar and herself.
