Vinesh Phogat first Indian wrestler to make 2020 Olympics cut

Vinesh Phogat, on Wednesday, became the first Indian wrestler to book her berth for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 25-year-old Vinesh, fighting in the 53kg category, achieved this feat en route to her bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

In doing so, the 25-year-old Vinesh became the fifth Indian woman grappler to win a World Championships medal, joining her cousins Geeta Phogat (55kg, 2012), Babita Kumari (51kg, 2012), Alka Tomar (59kg, 2006) and Pooja Dhanda (57kg, 2018).

Vinesh secured her Olympics berth with an 8-2 win against USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in her second repechage round and then defeated two-time World Championships medallist Maria Prevolaraki of Greece 4-1 to grab the bronze medal.

Besides Vinesh, last year's bronze medallist at the Worlds, Pooja will fight for bronze medal on Thursday in the 59kg category.
