Naomi Osaka of Japan won her first grand slam title when she defeated Serena Williams in the US Open 2018 women's singles final. Osaka, who became Japan's first grand slam winner, beat Williams 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

The match had a big controversial moment when Serena Williams was penalised a game after row with the chair umpire during the second set.

Serena Williams was given a warning by chair umpire Carlos Ramos because her coach was allegedly making hand signals, which results in code violation for 'coaching'. It left Williams incensed and she demanded an apology from the umpire.

"You owe me an apology. I have never cheated in my life! I have a daughter and I stand for what's right for her," Williams told Ramos on the court. "I don't cheat to win. I'd rather lose."

Serena later smashed her racket on the court after losing a point which resulted in another violation and docking of a point.

Serena kept arguing with the umpire and even called him a thief 'for a stealing a point from her'. The umpire then handed her a game penalty for 'verbal abuse'.

Williams was clearly emotional throughout the ordeal, and she ultimately had a lengthy conversation with US Open officials on the court in the wake of the incident. She even went on say that such things kept happening to her while male players were not penalised for such misdemeanors.

The game penalty put Osaka 5-3 up in second set and the 20-year-old Japanese kept her cool to pull off a historic win.

Osaka deserved to win

Despite the controversy, Osaka fully deserved to win the match. She dominated the match from the start.

The 24-year-old served really well and was not intimidated by the legend and her idol at the other hand. While Serena made mistakes, Osaka kept her cool and easily won the set  6-2.

She remained unfazed throughout the controversial moments in the second and calmly finished the match.

Osaka is only the second Asian to win a major after China's Li Na. Born to a Japanese mother and a Haitian father, Osaka grew up idolizing Serena Williams. This is only her second big title after winning at Indian Wells. Osaka is currently ranked 19 in the women's tour.
