UNICEF ropes in Deepika Kumari as celebrity supporter

Ace archer Deepika Kumari on Thursday announced support to UNICEF in Jharkhand as a celebrity supporter for ensuring rights of children.

"I have a special place in my heart for children, particularly those who are disadvantaged. I am fortunate to be in a situation where I can make a difference to their lives," the world number two women’s archer said at a function organised in UNICEF’s Ranchi office.

"I, therefore, welcome this association with UNICEF which will enable me to make a difference to society and people who have given me so much," she said.

She said if girls were given equal opportunity they could excel in any area and healthy and educated children were the best investment for the future.

Job Zachariah UNICEF Jharkhand chief said, UNICEF was proud to welcome Kumari as a celebrity supporter in its work to ensure health and education of children and to create a protective environment.

Describing Kumari as an icon for the youth, he said her support to UNICEF would help in promoting survival, development and protection of children in Jharkhand.

Kumari is from Ratu Chati village on the outskirts of Ranchi and works as Manager Sports, Tata Steel Ltd, Jamshedpur.
