MUMBAI: Unlike many fellow politicians, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Wednesday slammed Indian cricketers for their inability to perform away from home and said coach Greg Chappell could do very little with the bunch of players that he had at his disposal.

"Most of the players are unpredictable lads. It is very tough to predict who will perform and who will not," Thackeray said in a front-page article in the party mouthpiece Saamna.

"Chappell does not merit the criticism which he is facing. What can he do if the players are so unpredictable," Thackeray said.

"And moreover, the players have nothing at stake as whether they perform well or not, they continue to earn through television commercials," he added.
