Brazil captain David Luiz was in tears on Tuesday while apologising for his side's humiliating 1-7 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany.

Luiz said that three-time winners Germany played better than five-time winners Brazil, and described the loss as a very sad day for the team, the fans and the country. The BBC quoted Luiz , as saying that he wanted to see a smile on the faces of all Brazilians, but it was not meant to be.

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar described his team's collapse as a "blackout" and the defeat as "inexplicable". Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari took full responsibility for the defeat.
