Elvedi was left unguarded at the far post and met a perfect pass from Ibrahima Traore to tap in for the lead four minutes after the restart.

Gladbach could have scored again with Traore and Raffael, with Cologne clearly missing the clinical finish of striker Anthony Modeste, who left for China last month.

In the only other game on Sunday Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt shared the points following their goalless draw.

Champions Bayern Munich won their league opener against Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 on Friday. Borussia Dortmund also enjoyed a winning start with a 3-0 victory at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.
