Robert Lewandowski was in fine form in the UEFA Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Lyon on Wednesday. Serge Gnabry scored twice and Lewandowski added a third in the 88th minute as Bayern Munich set up a final clash against Paris Saint Germain on August 23rd. Bayern Munich are undefeated in 2020 as well as in the UEFA Champions League this season and they will be aiming to become the first team in history to win the title without losing a single game. Bayern Munich are also the Bundesliga champions and they will be gunning for more silverware this weekend. The main reason for Bayern Munich’s success has been the performance of Lewandowski.

The veteran has scored a total of 55 goals across competitions this season and he has matched this record from superstar Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to the goal tally. Ronaldo is the only other player to hit that number, although he has incredibly done so on three occasions - each time in successful campaigns for Real Madrid. In 2013-14, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner struck an unmatched 17, while he scored 16 and 15 in 2015-16 and 2017-18 respectively. Lewandowski has also now scored in nine consecutive Champions League matches. Only Ronaldo in 2018 (11) and fellow former Manchester United’s Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2003 (also nine) have netted in as many successive outings. Lewandowski has the chance to even match or surpass Ronaldo`s feat in Sunday’s final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Yet to see the best

Lewandowski’s magnificent form has given Bayern Munich the confidence that they could win the UEFA Champions League trophy for the sixth time. Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remarked that Bayern Munich had class spread in all departments as compared to the 2013 squad that achieved the treble. “We are better positioned across the board. Now we have a class that not only includes the 18-man squad, it is fantastic what a great team we have,” Neuer said.

With this, the pair of Gnabry and Lewandowski with the pair surpassed a record previously set by Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale for Real Madrid. The Bayern duo has now combined for 24 goals in the competition, surpassing the previous record set by Ronaldo and Bale, who fired 23 times between them during the 2013-14 Champions League.
