Restrictions on C'Wealth Games lanes from tomorrow

The restrictions on Commonwealth Games lanes will be implemented for the first time tomorrow.

The restrictions will be on the route from airport to Games Village in Akshardham between 11am and 12 noon and 10pm to 11pm.

"As per schedule received from organising committee regarding arrival of athletes and their trainers at different venues, there will be partial restriction on Games lane between airport and Games Village between 11:00am to 12:00 noon and 10:00pm to 11:00pm," joint commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said.

The athletes' movement to practice venues will be facilitated.

"There will be no exclusive Games lane restriction on various stretches in the city except mentioned above from Airport to Games Village," Garg said.

General public is expected to give way to Games-related traffic on hearing hooter or siren from traffic pilot motorcycle and on directions of traffic police officials posted at intersections, he said.

Anyone deliberately straying into the lanes while they are operational will attract a fine of Rs2,000.

A notification to invoke the fine or impounding of vehicle for violators entering the Games lane was issued by Lt governor's office earlier this month.

Those who are found "deliberately violating" the rule will be penalised. However, someone accidentally straying into the lanes may escape without penalty, a senior police official said.

He said the dedicated lane is part of the contract entered into by host city and Commonwealth Games Federation.

The official said there will be no special lanes for roads leading to practice venues but motorcycle patrols will lead the convoys of athletes.

Public is advised to avoid as far as possible CWG lanes in general and Safdurjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, Siri Fort Road, Harsukh Marg, Purana Quila Road and Mother Teresa Crescent Road in particular as these roads are having two lanes in one carriage way and one lane of it is already reserved for Games related traffic.
