Pinki Pramanik, the Asian Games gold medalist who had been charged with rape by her live-in partner Anamika Acharya, has been cleared of all charges by the Calcutta High Court.
Pinki had been arrested and kept in custody for 25 days after Acharya alleged that Pinki was really a man who had raped her. Pinki was made to undergo sex verification tests to confirm her gender.
On Friday, Justice Subrata Talukdar ordered that all charges framed against Prinki be quashed and the charge sheet against her also be dropped. The athlete was charged under sections 376 (rape), 417 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), 325 (assault) and 506 (intimidation), 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of a lawful marriage). A medical report by police had revealed that Pinki was male.
