Hard to keep cricket away from anything in India.
Aamir Khan starrer Dangal, which opened in theatres on Friday, December 23, is a sports biopic, tracing the incredible journey of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his family. The inspiring movie depicts the extreme lengths to which Mahavir goes to make his daughters, Geeta and Babita, international medal-winning wrestlers, out of a small town in Haryana where women making a career in sports was unheard of at that time.
Thespian Aamir and the rest of the cast have given stellar performances in Dangal, which is the reason why the movie is already being hailed as a runaway hit. In the movie, one can see the umpteen struggles that Mahavir has to go through to achieve his dream of seeing his daughters win a Gold medal for India. From family pressures to societal, the man withstood it all. But there was another roadblock the determined father had to face in his journey.
After his eldest daughter Geeta wins the National Wrestling Championship and gets selected for training at the National Sports Academy, she, for the first time in her life, is under the wings of a coach who wasn't her father. And the result of that was detrimental as the new coach moulds Geeta's aggressive playing style into defensive, which leads to a series of defeats for her.
Upset by this development, Aamir's character Mahavir mouths a gem of a dialogue. He gives the example of legendary Indian batsmen Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, referring to how the two were completely different when it came to playing style. His analogy brings out the point that each sports-person has his/her own skill-set and they can succeed only by honing those skills.
Says Mahavir, "Yeh toh wahi baat hui ki Virender Sehwag ko bolo ki Rahul Dravid jaise khele. Yeh karne se na woh Dravid ban payega aur na Sehwag reh jayega. (This is same as telling Virender Sehwag to play like Rahul Dravid. This way, neither will he become Dravid, nor will he remain Sehwag).”
Even though Dangal will go down as one of the better Hindi films of all time for various other reason, this clever dialogue will also be remembered for the significant impact it created in the narrative of the movie.
