Pune is likely to add yet another feather to its cap with a proposal to set up a sports university in the city. The varsity, first-of-its-kind in India, may soon come up at the Balewadi sports complex.
Confirming this development, the state secretary for sports and education YS Shriyia told dna on Tuesday, “Yes, we will soon have a sports university and most likely it will be set up in Pune.” He said the university would be of international standards with foreign coaches and top former Indian athletes playing a vital role in its formation. “Balewadi should be an ideal place as it has all facilities – the stadia, hostel and other required amenities. The varsity will encourage and boost the future of sports in the country,” Shriyia added.
Maharashtra sports minister Padmakar Valvi said, “There is proposal to set up the university from some corporates and promoters of sports. We will send it to the government to take the call.” He said the institution would cater to academics and sports. According to sources, the state government has identified two places in Maharashtra. “There is a proposal for such an institution in Thane besides Balewadi. It is left to the concerned people to take it forward,” they said.
