RIO DE JANEIRO: Carlos Alberto Parreira resigned as coach of Brazil on Wednesday, the Brazilian football confederation said.

Parreira had little chance of keeping his job after holders Brazil endured a disappointing World Cup campaign in Germany, which culminated in a quarterfinal exit against France, despite having started the competition as overwhelming favourites.

It was his second spell in charge of the Brazil national team having led them to World Cup victory in 1994.

Parreira has coached Kuwait (1982), United Arab Emirates (1990) and Saudi Arabia (1998).
