MELBOURNE: Leander Paes and his Australian partner Samantha Stosur earned a quarter-final berth in the Australian Open mixed doubles competition after a 6-3 6-4 win over South African Chris Haggard and Elini Daniilidou of Greece on Wednesday.

The third-seeded Indo-Australian pair prevailed over their opponents in just under an hour to set up a clash with Canadian Daniel Nestor and Russia's Elena Likhovtseva who beat the Australian team of Stephen Huss and Monique Adamczak 6-1 6-4 to seal a quarter-final place.

Paes and Stosur capitalised on both their break points while their opponents squandered the four they got.
