Although New Zealand got away off the start after the U.S. crew were penalised for being over the line, the defenders got back into the race and at one stage were leading, more than matching their opponents for speed.

But they were out-duelled on Bermuda's Great Sound and picked up another penalty for infringing the New Zealanders, who then streaked away and built a healthy lead to the finish.

"I think we've got the speed ... to put a win under our belt," U.S. skipper Jimmy Spithill said after the race.
