Sporting Clube de Goa have the edge over Mumbai FC when the meet in the I-League at the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Saturday.
Apart from the Goan squad’s good running in their league, the absence of Yusif Yakubu gives them an upper hand in their season opener.
“We have a new side and they are raring for the match,” said Khalid Jamil, Mumbai FC coach. “Yes, Yakubu is not here because of visa problems, but we have a good bench strength that will make up for his absence.”
Haroon Amiri will once again lead the team and comes on a high after winning the SAFF Championships with Afghanistan in Kathmandu earlier this month.
“The boys are in good shape. We are not concerned about who is present and who is absent,” said Oscar Bruzon Barreras, the Sporting coach who has made a big difference to the side since he took over last season.
It was Barreras, who helped the team with consistent performances in the second half of the season and guided them to finish sixth on the table. With the inclusion of Boima Jerry Karpeh, the side wears a different look. The Liberian-born Aussie striker, has been in the peak of his form.
“This season, I’m really surprised with the performance of Jerry. I am impressed with his commitment to the team, his work rate and willingness to improve. I am expecting to see him shine,” said Barreras.
