New FA chief wants Fabio Capello's successor to be English

New Football Association chairman David Bernstein has said that he would prefer Fabio Capello's successor to be English, which means Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is the huge favourite to replace Capello after Euro 2012.

Bernstein, who was nominated as the FA's leader on Wednesday, said it was not just him who thought the Italian's replacement should be homegrown, it was the wish of the country.

"I would prefer to see the best manager possible and if he was English, that would be preferable. There is probably a national desire for that," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

"Finding Fabio Capello's replacement is one of many vital issues to take on but it is of crucial importance to the country as a whole," Bernstein said.

"My job will be a lot easier if the England team is winning and anything that works towards that I'm all in favour of," he added.

Bernstein, 67, was a surprise choice for the job with former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein widely tipped to take the role, The Sun reports.
