M C Mary Kom won her fifth gold medal by beating North Korea’s Hyang Mi Kim at the Asian Boxing Championships at Ho Chi Minh City in 48 kg category on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old had proved that she still has fuel left in her tank as she kicked off the summit showdown aggressively to get an early lead in the first round. Mary, however, was less intensive in the subsequent two rounds as she picked her moment to strike, showed her defensive capability, before eventually fending off her challenger by a unanimous decision.

The five-time world champion had defeated Japan's Tsubasa Komura in a unanimous 5-0 verdict on Tuesday to make the summit clash for the fifth time in her six appearances at the event.

The 35-year-old Rajya Sabha MP, who is also a former Olympic bronze-medallist, returned to her preferred weight category after five years of competing in 51kg, which was made an Olympic category in 2012.
