Modric, who is rated at 40 million pounds by Spurs, can answer United's existing midfield woes, The Daily Star reports.

Modric's price tag could be a stumbling block as United is not ready to pay more than 30 million for him, but Ferguson will be hoping the midfielder can force Spurs' hand by telling them he wants to go to Old Trafford.

Ferguson has remained a huge fan of Modric and believes Spurs' failure to reach the Champions League next season could boost his chances of landing Modric.

United faces a tough battle to land the playmaker as Spurs look to hang on to one of their prize assets. Modric penned a new long-term deal at White Hart Lane before the start of last season.
