Long weekend and less number of contenders in the fray could result in a low turn out for the election of the Royal Western India Turf Club managing Committee to be held at the Mahalaxmi Race Course on Saturday.
There are just 10 contenders in the fray and one vacancy for a new face in the ballot vote, in this nine-member committee. Overall, this year’s RWITC election could be a low profile one. There are as many as 1,800 voters registered with the RWITC, but the attendance could be low.
Mohan Thakur, who had resigned from the committee during the Pune Season but was co-opted as member few weeks later, preferred to stay out of the race.
“We have appealed to all members to come forward for the AGM, but with long weekend and less number in the fray, the turn out will be on a low key,” said te RWITC chairman Vivek Jain on the eve of the big day.
Jain, who polled the maximum number of votes last year, is of the opinion that he would not get the same kind of number this time but percentage wise he is hopeful he will garner more votes.
Suresh Advani and Geoffrey Nagpal, who had lost last elections, are in the fray and have decided to contest for the nine-member managing committee.
The other sitting committee members, Vivek Jain, chairman of stewards Shivlal Daga, Jaydev Mody, Champaklal Zaveri, Shyam Ruia, Dr SC Jain, Dr Ram Shroff and Gautam Lala are all seeking re-elections.
