Argentina star Lionel Messi helped Frenkie de Jong set up Barcelona's 1-0 win at Huesca in what was his 750th appearance for Barcelona and 500th in La Liga.

Messi is now just behind Xavi Hernández, who has played 767 games for Barcelona and 505 in the Spanish league.

Messi has been on a record-breaking spree in the last few weeks as this comes after him breaking Pelé's all-time goal scoring record, two weeks ago.

Barcelona dominated the last-placed Huesca side but could only manage to score just a lone goal in the 27th minute. Messi played a part in that too as he forwarded a pass to De Jong, who netted the ball inside.

Messi's two chances were saved Huesca's goalkeeper Álvaro Fernández, one a free kick just before the halftime and second,a shot from close-in in the 68th minute.

Barcelona went up to fifth place after the win ahead of Sevilla. Barcelona is still 10 points behind the table-toppers, Atlético Madrid, who won at Alavés, 2-1 owing to Luis Suárez's late goal.

Suarez the Star

Atlético were on the verge of being satisfied with a draw against a 10-men Alavés (for half an hour). However, Luis Suarez had other plans.

His 90th minute goal from close range after João Félix's cross came right after they conceded an equalizer.

Suarez was instrumental in Atlético's initial lead in the 41st minute as his assist to Marcos Llorente, helped him to clear three defenders outside the area, before finding the net after it went through a deflection.

Alavés had earlier lost defender Victor Laguardia after a hard foul, which saw him being shown a red card after a video review.

Atlético gave up the lead in 84th minute after their defender Felipe did an own goal in an attempt to clear the cross inside the area.

The 2-1 victory gave Atletico a two-point lead over Real Madrid, who are in the second position.

After the win, Atlético's coach Diego Simeone said, “We had the game in hand, we didn’t put it away, then came their goal.

“The best part about today’s game was how the team handled the final minutes without getting nervous. The goal was a good one, with our No. 9 just where he should be.” Simeone’s team has won 11 of its past 12 league matches, with the only setback a 2-0 loss at Madrid four rounds ago.
