India's young brigade of shooters continued to shine at the ISSF Junior World Championship in Lima as 14-year-old shooter Naamya Kapoor clinched a gold medal in the 25m air pistol event on Monday (October 4). Meanwhile, it was a double delight for Indian shooting contingent as Tokyo Olympian Manu Bhaker won the bronze in the same event.
Kapoor was in scintillating shooting form as she shot an impressive 36 in the final round to bag the pole position ahead of France's Camille Jedrzejewski (33) and her fellow country mate Bhaker (31). Bhaker had to be content with bronze after the French markswoman pipped her for the silver in a shoot-off. India's Rhythm Sangwan narrowly missed out on being on the podium after finishing fourth in the finals.
Kapoor had a much better outing in the finals after finishing in sixth spot during the qualification round with an aggregate of 580. Meanwhile Bhaker (587) and Sangwan (586) had sealed the top two spots.
She had shot into instant fame earlier this year in August after shooting 583 points to finish fifth in the qualification round in the national shooting selection trials held at the Dr Karni Singh Range in New Delhi.
India maintained its pole position in the medals tally with seven gold, six silver and three bronze for a total of 16 medals.Manu Bhaker has shrugged off her disapointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a bagful of medals at the ISSF Junior World Championship.
Summarising the other results, two Indian pairs competing in the Skeet Mixed Team event namely; Ayush Rudraraju and Raiza Dhillon and Abhay Singh Sekhon and Areeba Khan, could not advance to the medal round as they finished seventh and 10th in qualification round with scores of 130 and 126 respectively.
The ISSF Junior World Championship happens to be the first major multi-discipline shooting event after the culmination of the Tokyo Olympics. Over 350 shooters from 32 nations are participating in the marquee event.
