Sunil Chhetri equaled Lionel Messi in terms of international goals as India beat Kenya in the final of Intercontinental Cup 2018 at the Mumbai Sports Arena on Sunday. 

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri needed 2 goals to equal Messi’s count of international goals. Chhetri scored a brace in the final to lead his team to 2-0 win and take his tally of international goals to 64..

The first goal came in the seventh minute when he flicked a free-kick from Thapa towards the goal. The second one came in the 28th minute, as Chhetri tracked a long-ball by Anas Edathodika and slid past the Kenyan defenders to unleashed a strike into the right-bottom corner.

He now sits with Messi as the second highest active goal scorer in international football.

Chhetri is next only to Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo who leads the tally with 81 goals of 124 matches. Chhetri has one the best goals per match ratio among the leading international goalscorers. Chhetri also went past Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Sweden in all time list of goal scorers.

Messi currently has 64 goals (124 games) for Argentina. The Argentine talisman will lead his nation in the 2018 World Cup.
