Kumar made the most of overcast conditions to harass the Kiwi top order.
India have been adopting the horses for courses policy when it comes to picking the playing 11. Chief coach Anil Kumble made it clear again here before the second Test that "in this squad we will only look at what is needed for that particular playing XI."
Based on this policy, India went in with Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his swinging abilities and left Umesh Yadav from the 11 for the Kolkata Test. And, the 26-year-old justified his selection with 5/33, his fourth five-wicket haul and first on Indian soil, to rattle the New Zealanders.
Kumar was not in the 11 for the first. Neither was he in all the Tests against the West Indies preceding the series. Kept out for the first two Tests in Antigua and Jamaica, Kumar was drafted into the 11 for the third Test in St Lucia and responded straightaway with 5/33 in the first innings.
Whenever Kumar is in the 11, he opens the bowling despite the presence of other certain bowlers in the line-up. On Saturday, he made use of the overcast conditions and maintained a line that tested the Kiwi top-order, making them play at it or leave the delivery at their own peril.
The manner in which he beat an established batsman as Ross Taylor or even Luke Ronchi, who has been having decent outings in the Indian conditions, was outstanding.
Ronchi said at the end of the day's play on Saturday that Kumar particularly bowled well on the pitch where the bounce was unpredictable.
"The bounce was a little unpredictable with the harder ball and obviously, it swings around. And later on he came back to bowl in nice lines to hit the stumps, to get LBW (Mitch Santner) and nicking off Ross (Taylor) in just the area where you make the batsman play pretty much.
"I think he made the batsman play and make decisions that he wanted and that we didn't want. So, he bowled really well," Ronchi, who played Kumar pretty effectively in his knock of 34, said.
India's wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, backed the team's policy to play according to the conditions.
"Bhuvi is, no doubt, a very good bowler. The bench strength in our team is very good. We can select a team according to the conditions and situations. In the last match, Umesh played, and in this one we felt the wicket might seam, so Bhuvi played, and he did really well. He has got five wickets. So, no doubt he has bowled outstandingly."
