Not many in the Australian squad were aware that sports psychologist Michael Lloyd would join them. Even though Cricket Australia maintains that sending Lloyd was a “pre-planned arrangement”, you can’t but connect it to the homeworkgate saga. With the first day’s play getting washed out because of incessant rain, Lloyd must have had enough time to interact with the players.
All-rounder Steven Smith, expected to bat at five, had a chance to interact with Lloyd. “He (Lloyd) is very good at his job. It was about the psychological side of things, trying to prepare and making sure you have got a clear mind. I play my best cricket when my mind is clear,” said Smith, who was only 21 when he last played a Test.
Smith does not have very fond memories of Chandigarh. When the Aussies were here in October 2010, Smith was the 12th man. His wayward overthrow gave India a one-wicket win. “Yeah, I know it was a little different the last time I was here. I came on as a 12th man and had three-four overthrows at the end of the game and ended up losing the match. Now, I am excited to be part of the playing eleven and hopefully play a role in bringing the team back in the series,” Smith said.
“I’m trying to stay relaxed during the time play is not possible,” he added. I kept myself busy playing ‘Bananagrams’, a bit like scrabble. Ed Cowan has introduced me to this game today (Thursday). It was little bit of fun and kept me occupied.”
