It seems that cricket and Indian Super League (ISL) will go hand in hand. It is known that Sachin Tendulkar has a stake in Kerala Blasters, the Kochi franchise. And on Tuesday, FC Goa announced Virat Kohli as their co-owner.
"Football is my second favourite sport and I was always keen on playing it. You can express yourself well with the ball. I want football to grow in India. There are so many people out there who want that to happen and I feel this is the best opportunity," said Kohli.
It's only natural that the ISL draws comparison to the Indian Premier League (IPL). "I think ISL is a great step for football in India. With the IPL, youngsters got a chance to share the dressing room with (Jacques) Kallis or (Sachin) Tendulkar, and to share their experiences with them. That makes their confidence go very high. Ultimately, that's what matters. You need to have the mental confidence. Likewise, I'm sure it'll be a dream-come-true for youngsters to play with (Robert) Pires and to be trained by Zico. The more time they spend with them, the better they will get. It will definitely help their mentality. It's a great step really."
Asked whether if he was investing in the club only because of his love for football, Kohli replied in his usual witty way: "Well, I'm not going to be playing cricket forever. I need something to fall back upon when I retire. I'm a part of this venture because I love football, but yes, I'm also looking at it as a business venture."
So who's his favourite club? "I'm a huge (Cristiano) Ronaldo fan. Wherever he goes, I support that club. It's going to be the first time I'll be loyal to a club. I was really star-struck when I met Zico and Pires. I actually took selfies with them."
