Gujarat eyes champions in chess, badminton through MoUs

Too sporty: Sanskardham enters into MOU with 4 academies to train sportsperson in different sports

The state government on Sunday inaugurated the Khel Mahakumbh 2019 from Sanskardham Sports academy and also entered into four MOUs with different organisations to promote sports in Gujarat. All these organisations are headed by renowned sportsperson who have made a mark in their respective sports.

The academy itself was inaugurated by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju. The academy is a district-level sports school that trains sportspersons chosen by the state government who have the potential to make it big.

The Sanskardham Academy entered into MOUs to promote shooting, badminton, chess and table tennis. The Gun for Glory (Gagan Narang), Gopichand Academy for Badminton (Pullela Gopichand ), Chess Academy (Kunte) and Ultimate Table Tennis (Kamlesh Mehta) were the organisations with which the academy entered into an MOU.

Speaking about the efforts put in by the state government, chief minister Vijay Rupani said that the Shaktidoot Yojana of the state has helped it get 693 gold, silver and bronze medals in various competitions.

The programme identifies talented sportspersons and trains them to excel in their sports. He said that 46 lakh sports enthusiasts had registered themselves for the Khel Mahakumbh this year. He also urged the citizens to take time from their busy schedule to ensure some physical activities for an hour and also encourage friends and neighbours to participate in it as part of the Prime Minister’s Fit India Mission.

“To encourage our sportsperson to perform better the state has so far given out Rs40 crore by way of prizes to over 1.60 lakh sportspersons,” said Rupani.

Dinesh Kapadia, secretary Sports Authority of Gujarat said that the MOUs will be very beneficial in training the students who choose to excel in these sports. “All the institutions that the MOUs have been entered into are renowned names in their own field. Sportspersons who are selected to be trained at the Sanskardham Academy will benefit from the cooperation,” said Kapadia.

Rijiju said that India is no more satisfied with getting just one or two medals at international events. “The sort of infrastructure development that has been provided to encourage sports in Gujarat is something that I have not seen anywhere else in the country. We also plan to learn from the Khel Mahakumbh initiative of the state government,” said Rijiju.

Boxer Mary Kom who was among the sports star present on the occasion said that there was a need to promote value-based education. “Sports is not just a game you play. You can make a career out of it, more importantly, you can stay fit through it,” said Kom “When we are fit we have the confidence to face any difficulties,” she said.
