Kavita Raut was obviously disheartened after failing to qualify for the London Olympics. But the good news is that the Nashik-based distance runner is smiling again.

The reason: the 27-year-old has been nominated for the Arjuna Award, thereby making her the first female athlete from the state (athletics category) to be bestowed upon the big prize.

“I was a little disappointed when I missed out on an Olympic berth, but this prestigious award has given me a lot of confidence. I feel so enthusiastic now,” Raut said.

“My career is not over yet,” the 2010 Asian Games silver medallist (10,000 metres) declared. “Now, I am looking forward to the National Games. Then, I’ll participate in the Asian and world championships. But qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics is biggest target.”

Raut, who was born and raised in Savarpada (a hamlet near Harsul in Nashik), has indeed come a long way. “I am very thankful to my parents, coach Vijendra Singh, the sponsors in Nashik, the medical fraternity there and, of course, the people who have inspired and motivated me all these years. It has been a long journey and I have learnt so many things,” said Raut.

Raut, who used to run barefoot on hilly terrain to fetch water, worked hard to become a successful pro. She is now an inspiration to distance runners all over the country.

“This award will not only motivate me, but others too. I always tend to share my experience with Monica Athre, Anjana Thamke and others who are stars in the making,” she said.
