India's Ramkumar Ramanathan lost to Australia's Jason Kubler 4-6,4-6 in the first qualification round of the French Open on Monday after a 92-minute encounter in Paris.

The Australian looked sharp right from the from the first set as he took the match completely away from Ramkumar to secure a straight set victory to qualify for the next round of the qualifier for Ronald-Garros. This is the first time Kubler got past the first qualifying round of the French Open.

The current world 144 for the third season running, failed to go past the first round of a qualifier for a grand tournament. This was a tough loss for Ramanathan, who has had a decent track record at ATP tournaments in the past couple of years. It includes a win against Austrian Dominic Thiem in the Antalya Open, 2017 and also a landmark ATP final at 2018 Hall of Fame Open.

Ramkumar reached the second round of the qualifier by defeating Jared Donaldson back in 2015, which still remains his best performance at Ronald-Garros. Ever since he turned pro, he has failed to go past the qualifiers, as his wait for the first appearance at the Grand Slam continues.

All of India's hope is now on Prajnesh Gunneswaran, currently ranked 86 in the world for the men's bracket. Gunneswaran got drafted straight into the main draw of the tournament due to his higher ranking and will now be the only Indian at the tournament.
