Last year's finalists Haryana and Madhya Pradesh won their respective openers in the fourth edition of the sub-junior girls national hockey tournament which started at the Balewadi sports complex here on Monday.Arjuna awardee and former skipper of Indian hockey Dhanraj Pillay inaugurated the event.

Haryana thumped Rajasthan 15-0 with Ekta Kaushik scoring nine goals which included the first hat-trick of the tournament. Later in the day, Jyoti Pal scored a treble (her first career hat-trick) as Madhya Pradesh got the better of Chhattisgarh 6-0. After missing over a dozen chances in the first session, Madhya Pradesh, who led by a solitary goal against Chhattisgarh, scored five in the second half.

"Since they made their debut at this level, there were a few errors but they did make amends later," said Vandana C, manager of Madhya Pradesh.

Jyoti said: "I have been playing for two years and this championship will be special as I have opened with a three-goal spree."

Taking a leaf out of Haryana's books, Andhra Pradesh also netted 15 against Kerala while Karnataka trounced Tamil Nadu 8-0, taking the day's goal tally to 44 in four matches.
