Formula 1: Fernando Alonso comes out of retirement to sign with Renault F1 team for 2021 season

The 39-year-old, who is a two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner, won his championships in 2005 and 2006 and drove for McLaren in the 2018 season.

Veteran Formula 1 racer Fernando Alonso has opted to come out of his retirement and make his return to the motorsport racing once again.

Renault on Wednesday (July 8) officially confirmed that the Spaniard will be joining them for the 2021 season.

"Fernando Alonso joins Renault DP World F1 Team Renault DP World F1 Team is pleased to confirm Fernando Alonso alongside Esteban Ocon in its driver line-up for the 2021 season," Renault F1 team wrote on Twitter

Speaking about Alonso's return, Cyril Abiteboul -- Renault F1 team head-- said: "The signing of Fernando Alonso is part of Groupe Renault’s plan to continue its commitment to F1 and to return to the top of the field."

"His presence in our team is a formidable asset on the sporting level but also for the brand to which he is very attached."

The 39-year-old, who is a two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner, won his championships in 2005 and 2006 and drove for McLaren in the 2018 season.

Alonso is also set to become the first driver in the history of F1 to have three separate stints with a single Formula 1 team.

Back in 2003-06 and from 2008-09, Alonso had raced for Renault and will be once again behind the wheel for the 2021 season.

Alonso will be partnering Esteban Ocon at Renault for the much-awaited next season.
