The dispute regarding dues between Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) and Jaipur police ended just hours before the start of the first Champions League T20 (CLT) match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.
Interestingly, security of the players was left to fate as no police personnel had been provided by the Jaipur police due to non payment of Rs1 crore for seven CLT matches to be held in Jaipur.
The deployment of more than 400 policemen could only be done once the spat between the two bodies finally mollified on Friday.
Notably, the Jaipur police had demanded Rs1 crore for providing the security during matches but it was refused by the RCA officials stating that the amount was “too high”.
Sources revealed that it took the intervention of the state government into the matter to straighten things up between the two. This is not the first time when the non-payment by the RCA has brought players’ security at risk. Earlier, the RCA locked horns with the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) for the conduction of matches due to the same problem.
The RCA was not ready to pay Rs 61 lakh demanded by the RSSC. This also went to the wire with officials getting things right at the right moment. The RCA-RSSC issue is still not over and the matches are being conducted on state government’s intervention.
On Saturday, the SMS Stadium was guarded by 400 odd police personnel. “The issue is finally over as we have been notified by the RCA officials that they have given nod to make the payments.
We have deployed 400 odd security personnel to guard the venue for the first match on Saturday between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians,” Don K Jose, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), South, told dna.
In addition to this, high profile cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and others from both the teams had landed in the city four days ago but there was hardly any security for them. Even when the players were transported from hotel to the stadium, there was no police convoy to escort them.
