Has Cheteshwar Pujara’s time come? This will be known on Monday when the national selection committee meets to pick the team for the two-Test series against Australia but indications are that the Saurashtra batsman is on the shortlist of Kris Srikkanth & Co.
According to sources in the selection committee, the 22-year-old middle-order batsman, who has been a prolific scorer on the domestic circuit, will be the main player under discussion.
Sources say the right-hander stands a strong chance to be included in the squad for the first Test.
The middle-order will be the main point of discussion, confirmed a committee source. This effectively means that Yuvraj Singh — who didn’t have a great series in Sri Lanka — will also feature in the discussion. None of the sources was, however, willing to discuss Rahul Dravid, who, too, did not have great time in Lanka (he scored 95 in three Tests).
Yuvraj played one Test and scored 57 before conceding his place to Suresh Raina, first because of injury and then because of the brilliant debut of the Uttar Pradesh left-hander.
At this stage, the only factor that might stop Pujara from being picked is the quality opposition. The selectors want to make sure that they the pick the best squad to take on Ricky Ponting & Co.
“You have to note that we are going to pick a squad for a series against Australia. We cannot experiment. Only the best will be chosen,” said the source.
Pujara had a fairly successful tour of England with the India ‘A’ team, having scored 322 runs, including a double century. Since then, the calls for his inclusion have only got louder. It was learnt that the reports of the coach and manager of the India ‘A’ team praised the attitude and performance of Pujara.
Among other things, the selectors will look at the fitness of the India’s pace department. Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan, currently playing in the Champions League T20 in South Africa, will be recalled if his fitness is up to the mark. He had missed the Sri Lanka tour due to injury.
