He achieved international stardom at the age of 38 by scoring four goals at the 1990 World Cup. The most memorable of those came in the match against Colombia when he dispossessed the showboating Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita 35 yards from goal, going on to score in the empty net with Higuita stranded. He helped Cameroon to become the first African team reach the World Cup quarterfinals. Four years later, at the age of 42, he became the oldest goal-scorer in World Cup history by netting one against Russia. He is also remembered for his trademark goal celebration of running to the corner flag and performing a dance. In the years that have followed, he has been recognised as a pioneer of the many unconventional and imaginative goal celebrations seen these days.
