2005 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND

* O'Driscoll lasted less than two minutes of the first test before he was upended by Tana Umaga and Keven Mealamu, dislocating his shoulder. The acrimony of the incident permeated throughout the tour.
* The 'midweek side' went through unbeaten, including a 109-6 victory over Manawatu in which Wales winger Shane Williams scored five tries.
* Flyhalf Dan Carter scored 33 of New Zealand's 48 points in a brilliant performance in the second test.
1993 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND

Coach: Ian McGeechan (Scotland)
* Lions lost test series 2-1 in last tour of the amateur era.
* Lions lose to Otago before the first test, Auckland and Hawke's Bay before the second and Waikato before the third, a match in which 2017 Lions coach Warren Gatland scored a try.
* Lions claimed an emphatic 20-7 victory in the second test but the All Blacks clinched the series with a 30-13 win.
1983 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND
Captain: Ciaran Fitzgerald (Ireland)
Coach: Jim Telfer (Scotland)
* Played 18 matches, including four tests. Lost the series 4-0.
* After suffering narrow defeats in the first three tests, Telfer put his players through an exhausting training session the day before the final test. They were thumped 38-6.
* All Blacks winger Stu Wilson scored a hat-trick of tries in the fourth test.
1977 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND

Coach: John Dawes (Wales)
* Arrived with confidence after the success of 1971 and 1974 tours but lost test series 3-1 in a tour dogged by terrible weather.
* Won the first seven games before losing to New Zealand Universities 21-9, ending an unbeaten run of 39 matches.
* Lions lost the first test 16-12 in Wellington but managed to scratch a 13-9 victory in the second in Christchurch.
* Also lost the third test 19-7 in Dunedin but should have won the final game at Eden Park, going down 10-9 despite dominating the match.
1971 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND
Captain: John Dawes (Wales)
Coach: Carwyn James (Wales)
* First Lions team to win a test series in New Zealand (2-1).
* Last test series for All Blacks lock Colin Meads.
* Lions backline boasting Barry John, David Duckham, JPR Williams, Gareth Edwards, Mike Gibson and captain Dawes thrilled spectators up and down the country.
* Lions won the first test 9-3 in Dunedin before losing 22-12 in Christchurch.
* All Blacks number eight Brian Lochore was called out of retirement to play the third test. Left a note to his wife with the words "Gone to Wellington, playing test tomorrow". The All Blacks lost 13-3.
* Final test drawn 14-14.
1966 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA
Captain: Mike Campbell Lamerton (Scotland)
Coach: John Robins (Wales)
* Played 35 matches, 27 in New Zealand where they lost to Southland, Otago and Wellington. Swept 4-0 in New Zealand tests.
* John Robins was the first official Lions coach, with previous coaches effectively tour managers.
* Army officer Campbell-Lamerton was a surprise choice as captain and did not earn selection for two tests.
* Tour was punctuated with controversy with accusations from the Lions of foul play.
1959 TOUR OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Captain: Ronnie Dawson (Ireland)
Manager: O.B. Glasgow
* Played 33 matches, including six in Australia and two in Canada on the way home. Lost New Zealand test series 3-1.
* Adopted an all-out attacking style, with Ireland winger Tony O'Reilly scoring 17 of his 22 tour tries in New Zealand.
* All Blacks fullback Don Clarke kicked a then record six penalties in the 18-17 first test victory.
* All Blacks also won the second test 11-8 and third test 22-8 before the Lions grabbed a consolation 9-6 win in Auckland.
1950 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA
Captain: Karl Mullen (Ireland)
* Played 29 matches on tour, 23 of which were in New Zealand. Lost New Zealand test series 3-0.
* The last Lions squad to come to New Zealand by boat, although replacement Lewis Jones arrived by air after George Norton broke his arm.
* Widely considered one of the friendliest teams to visit New Zealand
* Lost to Otago and Southland before the first test in Dunedin, which ended in a 9-9 draw after some ferocious rucking from the All Blacks forwards.
* All Blacks captain Ron Elvidge left the field with an injured collarbone and facial cuts during the third test. He returned to score a try that levelled the score at 3-3 before Bob Scott kicked a penalty to win the game 6-3.
* All Blacks also won the second test in Christchurch 8-0 and fourth test in Auckland 11-8.
1930 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA
Captain: Doug Prentice (England)
* Considered the first bona fide British team and first to be widely referred to as the Lions. Lost the test series 3-1.
* Lions wore dark blue jerseys, forcing the All Blacks to play in white in the first test.
* Recorded their first test win against the All Blacks, a 6-3 victory in the first test in Dunedin.
1908 TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA
Captain: Arthur Harding (Wales)
* Played 26 matches, 17 in New Zealand, including a first test series against the All Blacks, which they lost 2-0.
* Only players from England and Wales players were represented and the team wore red jerseys with broad white hoops.
* The All Blacks won the series with a 32-5 victory in the first test in Dunedin and a 29-0 win in the third.
* The second test in Wellington was drawn 3-3 in atrocious weather conditions.
1904 TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & NZ
Captain: David Bedell-Sivright (Scotland)
* Played 19 matches, five of which were in New Zealand.
* Played their first test against NZ, losing 9-3 in Wellington.
* Player-manager Arthur O'Brien was a New Zealander studying medicine in London. He selected himself for all four tests in Australia and New Zealand.
1888 TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND
Captain: Robert Seddon (England)
* Played 35 matches, 19 in New Zealand, losing 4-0 to Auckland and 1-0 to Taranaki clubs. No tests.
* A private tour organised by three professional cricketers, while in Australia they played 19 Australian Rules matches.
* Captain Seddon drowned in a boating accident in Australia and was replaced by compatriot Andrew Stoddart.
