The Australian Grand Prix did not go as planned for Lewis Hamilton, who lost his podium spot after receiving a fat 5-second penalty on Sunday (July 5).

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was not too pleased as well with the way events played out.

The 6-time Formula 1 champion received the penalty after he bumped into Alexander Albon during the race when the Red Bull driver tried to dive around the outside.

Following a full investigation, Hamilton was handed a penalty for his role in the collision by the stewards which ended up costing him a podium finish.

However, Wolff was not at all impressed with the call and claimed that Lewis was already on full lock so the collision was unavoidable.

"The stewards are always in a difficult position to take the right decisions. I think today was a bad day for Lewis and a bad day for the team," Toto Wolff said while addressing the media.

"Obviously the three grid position penalty that he got in the morning, with Red Bull digging out a different camera angle, you have to take it on the chin, and it is what it is."

"Then in the race, I would definitely say, from my perspective, the five seconds were too harsh. We looked at the video now a couple of times. Lewis was having full lock in the corner. Albon had about 40% of the road left to make the corner and it was different to lap one, where Lewis had to back out of Albon pushing Lewis."

“So in my opinion, not justified. But I recognise the complexity of the job, of coming up with the right decisions. Some go for you, some go against you," he concluded.

However, fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas won the opening race of the season and secured valuable points for his side to kick the new season off in style once again.
