After being routed by an innings and 71-runs in the second Test in Adelaide, Ponting's team thrashed England by 267 runs early on the fourth day to level the five-test series 1-1.
Captain Ricky Ponting celebrated his 36th birthday with a crushing win over England on Sunday and said Australia's stunning turnaround in form in Perth would force England to regard them in a different light for the rest of the series.
After being routed by an innings and 71-runs in the second Test in Adelaide, Ponting's team thrashed England by 267 runs early on the fourth day to level the five-test series 1-1 and swing the momentum firmly back to the hosts.
"We got a nice old hiding in Adelaide last week and to be able to bounce back as dramatically and drastically here says a lot about us and where were at right at this moment in the series. It's really pleasing," Ponting told reporters.
"There's some great lessons for us to learn out of this game, the way that we've played our cricket.
"I think now England might just start to have a bit of a look at one -- their team make-up for Melbourne and two -- the sort of cricket they play to have to beat us."
Having been spanked in Adelaide after losing their first three wickets for two runs, Australia appeared set for another calamitous defeat when their batsman slumped to 36-4 on day one.
Cue Mitchell Johnson who scored a 62 in a rearguard fightback then helped Australia crash through England's batting lineup for 187 with a searing six-wicket spell to set up the victory.
"Mitchell's spell was unbelievable, probably one of the odds-on great Ashes spells," Ponting said of the mercurial pace bowler who was dropped after a wayward, wicketless spell in the drawn first test in Brisbane.
"It's transformed him and it's transformed the way that everybody talks about him and thinks about him as a bowler, whether that's in this room or in the English dressing room, most importantly in the English dressing room.
"Some of the deliveries that got their batsmen out will now have them thinking seriously about the way that they play him.
"I heard some rumours coming in, whispers coming in to the game that they had Mitch's type of bowling worked out and knew how to play him. I'm not sure that they're saying that now."
Ponting said his belief in his team had never wavered amid scathing criticism from former players and local pundits.
"I've just been waiting for it all to click together like it all has this week.
"It's an amazing thing what a bit of confidence does and just having that winning feeling around the team."
"We've got that now, we need to be aware of that and we need to be aware of what we've done so well this week that's made us win this game and make sure we continue to do that for the next couple of weeks."
