David Warner is being investigated over claims of an unprovoked attack on England’s Joe Root. As a consequence, the Australian opener was left out of the CT match against New Zealand.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Warner “initiated an unprovoked physical attack on a member of the England team in a Birmingham bar following England’s 48-run victory over Australia”.

The Australia media carried reports of how the Australian and English players arrived at a pub and were together at a VIP area close to a bar.

They were apparently comfortable in one another’s company. It couldn’t be established how and when Warner got into a confrontation with Root. Warner was alleged to have “pushed and shoved” him.

According to a daily, “Root reportedly had been wearing a wig and turned it into a beard and made some remark before it was ripped off by Warner who chipped him on the chin.”

The report also quoted a witness as saying, “They were all a bit merry but not drinking excessively and there was some issue between the two but others dealt with it quickly.

Both of them (Warner and Root) went on chatting straight after so whatever it was couldn’t have been that serious. That was the level of it. It wasn’t anything full on.” It claims that Stuart Broad pulled Root back and said, “Time to go back to the hotel.”
