Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 100th goal for Portugal in their Nations League clash away to Sweden on Tuesday, joining Iran's Ali Daei as the only male players to score 100 goals or more in international soccer.  Having been denied on a number of occasions by Sweden keeper Robin Olsen, the 35-year-old forward made no mistake when presented with a free kick just before halftime. He took a short run-up and unleashed a powerful dipping effort that flew beyond Olsen’s despairing fingertips and just under the crossbar.

Ronaldo struck again in the 72nd minute, drifting in from the left before once again curling a dipping shot, this time to Olsen’s left, to put Portugal 2-0 up.

Ronaldo’s first senior goal for Portugal came in a 2-1 loss to Greece at Euro 2004 and he needs eight more to equal Daei`s record of 109 international goals.

Comeback for Ronaldo

Ronaldo did not feature for Portugal during their 4-1 win over Croatia due to a reported toe infection but was present at the stands, watching over his side's performance. Ronaldo, who scored for Portugal back in November last year, was asked to put on his mask as part of the COVID-19 health and safety measures during the UEFA Nations League match.

Portugal were in fine form as they found the back of the net four times with Joao Cancelo, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and Andre Silva all scoring. Bruno Fernandes was instrumental on the pitch once more as he picked up an assist and led the charge in Cristiano's absence.

During the match, the camera panned to Ronaldo sitting in the empty stands enjoying his side's dominant display when he got asked to put on his COVID-19 mask by a member of the staff. The Juventus forward was sitting with some of his teammates who had their masks on, but Ronaldo clearly forgot to put on his. However, Ronaldo immediately strapped his protective mask back on after that as he continued to cheer on Portugal from the stands.
