Star WWE wrestler and Hollywood actor Dwayne Johnson aka "The Rock" has voiced his views on the recent killings of African-Americans in the United States.
The Rock expressed his thoughts over the outrage across the country which started after the death of an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.
Derek Chauvin, Minneapolis police officer, was charged with murder in the death of 46-year-old George Floyd after a video clip of the officer kneeling on Floyd's neck generated a wave of protests across the nation.
The former wrestler took to social media to share a heartfelt post and also realised questions over the colleagues of Derek Chauvin, who remained silent while he continued to chock George with his knee.
"Past few days I’ve been stunned trying make sense of George Flyod’s death.The video.The plea for breath.The callous response. The racism. The killing. This is our ongoing disease. I’ve had cops in my family. Good men. And there’s a cop code, granting you the authority to use force if your life is in danger," he wrote on Instagram.
"But when a man is handcuffed, on the ground, no longer a threat, with your brothers in arms standing around watching and he struggles to say, “please I can’t breathe” when your knee is on his neck.. not his back, but his neck - cutting off his air."
"Cop code must become moral code. Ethics code. HUMANITY code. Knowing that if you don’t ease up, then that man is going to die. So when you decide to not ease up, your intention is to kill. And that’s what this was. George Floyd, said “officer I can’t breathe” as he struggled for air. He said these words a total of 15 times. Not once. Not twice. 15 times," he added.
"These officers will be charged, I’m positive of that. Held accountable. But then where’s the greater accountability? The leadership to healing. More importantly, the leadership to EQUALITY. We ultimately win when we can normalize equality. I’m so sorry to the Floyd family. My heart breaks for you. Let the process begin now," he further claimed.
Soon after Floyd's death in police custody on Monday, the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul erupted in massive protests.
Protesters also torched the 3rd Precinct station, the focus of many of the protests, which was abandoned before the angry crowd surrounded the building.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey made his first public appearance of the night at City Hall near 2 am Friday and said the precinct was evacuated as it had become too dangerous for officers there.
