Commonwealth Games organisers get media-savvy

The Commonwealth Games may have been in the news more for the wrong reasons than the right ones in the past, but the organisers are hoping to change that with the new media centre that has become operational at their headquarters here.

A string of computer terminals, efficient internet connectivity and a robust speaker system will help media men in their tasks, but most importantly, they can now hope to have information as and when required.

“The whole idea of opening this centre a good four months before the games is to ensure the media does not struggle. It also gives us the opportunity to clear any doubts and apprehensions as it is important to give a positive image of ourselves,” says Lalit K Bhanot, secretary-general of the organising committee.

“We are hoping that the centre will become a hub for media persons as the weeks go by. This centre will be the main one till September 15 but will remain operational even after that, when the main media centre will become operational,” he adds.

The 19th CWG are scheduled to be held here from October 3 to 14, with there being several concerns over the progress of work at venues. “Everything will be settled in time at the venues. In the past, we have had media reports quoting old reports on progress of work, but now that we have such a robust arrangement in place and the intent to interact more, that is set to change,” adds Bhanot.

The centre is expected to act as a buffer between the main organising committee office and the main reception, for the media persons. Most press conferences too will be held here from now on. The organisers are also planning to have a daily ‘meet the press hour’ as the games approach.
