"I am really happy to win the medal," Sindhu told WION's Digvijay Singh Deo, "I had been waiting for this for long. It was a much-needed victory.

By winning the title, Sindhu has become the first Indian to clinch a gold medal at the World Championships. At only 24 years of age, she has already managed to bag one gold, two silvers, and two bronze medals at the World Championships.

Sindhu acknowledged that she had worked hard for this title. "World Championship is very special," said the young star shuttler, "I had tears in my eyes."

Her mother, P Vijaya, was elated on her daughter's win. "She was trained really tough. This time we thought she will get a better result. We are very happy. We are waiting for that gold medal. This is the third time she was playing in the final," Vijaya later told news agency ANI.

Sindhu got off to a flying start and dominated Okuhara throughout in the first game. At one point, the points were 16-2 and Sindhu did not lose the momentum as she registered a 21-7 victory in the first game.

The second game also started on a similar note with Sindhu taking a massive lead and then winning the second game by 21-7 in 20 minutes.

Earlier in 2017, Sindhu had brought home a silver along with Saina Nehwal who had won a bronze medal at the World Championships. This time around, two Indian shuttlers will again be bringing back two medals from the tournament - with Sindhu's gold and Sai Praneeth's bronze medal.

Congratulating PV Sindhu for winning the BWF World Championships, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said her success will inspire generations of players.

The 24-year-old had entered in the final of the competition by defeating China's Chen Yu Fei 21-7, 21-14 on Saturday.
