COMO, Italy: Recently crowned world champion Paolo Bettini of Italy won the Tour of Lombardy cycle race in Como, north of Milan, on Saturday.

Bettini attacked 18 kms from the finish and crossed the line in tears and pointing to the sky in memory of his brother Sauro who was killed in a car accident on Oct. 2.   

Spain's Samuel Sanchez finished second and Germany's Fabian Wegmann was third.   

The 245-km Tour of Lombardy was the last major race of the 2006 European cycling season.
