Wherlein had damaged his back because of a crash at Race of Champions Nations Cup event in Miami in January.

New recruit of Sauber finished over a second quicker than his teammate Marcus Ericsson who failed to join in Q2 and now will start at P19.

Though still suffering from some back pain, Wherlein is happy with his comeback. "I could improve session by session since yesterday. We have always done the right step in the right direction in terms of set-up. I’m feeling more confident in the car with every lap, and I’m just really happy about the result," the racer is quoted as saying on Formula 1 website.

Wehrlein is aware that he will be stepping into the unknown given his lack of long runs in the car and the current back pain. He said that he doesn't know what to expect but he will try to maximise the result, do his best and have fun.
