Australian Open: Roger Federer admits he got 'lucky' during showdown against Tennys Sandgren

Roger Federer had an epic showdown against America's Tennys Sandgren at the Australian Open where he survived seven match points before sealing a five-set victory.

At the end of the clash, Federer even admitted that he was lucky to get through to the last four.

"You have got to get lucky sometimes I tell you that,” he said.

“Them seven match points were not under control.

"You just keep the ball in play and who knows what he is thinking about if he misses one or two.

"I think I got incredibly lucky today. As the match went on I started to feel better again. All the pressure went away and I just started to play.

"I don't deserve this one but I am standing here and I am obviously very happy."

In the clash, Federer struggled at the start with injury and was also involved in a rant towards the umpire over a time violation.

However, the Swiss star overcame all to win the match 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 6-3.

"It was unbelievable,” Federer added.

“I don't know how I escaped but it was a lucky one. When you are having an issue, big or small, the most important thing is knowing how bad it can get.

"I felt it was a stiffness. The question is, how can you deal with it? It wasn't bad enough to stop. If I can stay with him, you never know.

“I know my problem now so things get simple. It's all on the opponent. It was a tough match for him so I'm sorry about that."
