If the delayed visa goof-up is not enough, the Indian contingent faced yet another embarrassment when the four-member yachting team reported here at the Games Village on Sunday after being cleared by the Delhi High Court on no-cost to the government.
dna has learnt that since the Delegates Registration Meeting (DRM), which finalises the list of athletes to be given accreditation was over before the start of Games, there was no way that official accreditation could be given to these four sailors.
It was after the sports ministry rejected their names in the first list that their accreditation was cancelled by the Games Organising Committee.
Yatching team is led by Upamanyu Dutta and Ayush Choudhury is his sailor while the women's side is led by Diya Correa. Name of fourth sailor could not be confirmed.
According to a senior Indian Olympic Association official, all four were asked to make their own arrangements to stay. "The Games Village is almost full and there is no way yachting team can be accommodated along with other athletes. Moreover, they have come on their own expense," said the official.
However, the process of renewing their accreditation has begun and likely to be completed any time. "The accreditation process is on and everything is done," added the official.
Interestingly, KD Singh, manager of the yachting team currently in Korea with official Indian contingent, did not even know about the development.
He only heard the news when dna called him to enquire.
