Premier League clubs Manchester United and Manchester City have made a combined donation of £100,000 (88,10,025.34 INR) to the Greater Manchester meet to help food banks amid coronavirus in the country.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday (March 13) declared that the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic has moved from China, where new cases reported have drastically decreased, to Europe, where most countries are seeing a climb in infections and fatalities.

All major football competitions like La Liga, Premier League, Champions League, Ligue 1, and Serie A have been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The two Manchester clubs donated £50,000 each to the Trussell Trust.

"We are proud of the role our supporters play in helping local food banks and recognise the increased strain likely to be placed on these charities by the impact of coronavirus. At a time of challenge for our community, we are pleased to come together with our fans to help vulnerable members of society in a City United," Man City and Man United said in a joint-statement.

"As the coronavirus pandemic develops, more people than ever may need help from food banks across our network. This situation presents a huge additional pressure on already overstretched resources. We may start to see a reduction in food donations and volunteers may become unavailable if they are in the at-risk categories or are self-isolating," The Trussell Trust’s senior operations manager Rachel Macklin said.

More than 240,000 people have been infected with the virus so far worldwide, with over 10,000 fatalities.
